Description
No 1 Gorphwysfa is a two-storey stone building located at the west end of the block. It is whitewashed and has boulder foundations, topped with an old slate roof featuring blue ridge tiles. The building has two window bays, with the entrance leading into a larger room on the right and an internal door that connects to a heated inner room at the west end. The front door is boarded, and there are two windows on the first floor and one on the ground floor to the left of the door, all fitted with single sheet glass in the original openings. A stack is present on the west gable end, complete with weather drip courses. At the rear, there is an outshut with a small gabled stack and a small gabled dormer window. The inn also features a cellar.
Inside, the outer room has a chamfered spine beam and exposed joists. The wall separating Nos 1 and 2 is made of post and wattle and daub, with a blocked doorway. One section of this partition retains remnants of a wall painting, which depicts a simple floral vertical meander pattern in dark grey/green with red ochre flowers, extending over the timbers. Before damage occurred in early 1999, there were three similarly painted panels. There is evidence of a former timber partition parallel to the front elevation. A large inglenook fireplace is located at the gable end, featuring a chamfered lintel and a smaller recess to the right, possibly a curing cupboard. The stairs date from the 19th century. The upper floor has a woven hazel partition, which was originally plastered with daub. The roof truss is only partially visible, but it includes heavy principal rafters, and the tie beam has been cut. The wall paintings suffered significant damage from a fire in early 1999.
