Description

This barn range, built of whitewashed rubble stone with slate roofs, likely dates from the 18th century. It’s a long, continuous structure consisting of a long barn to the east, a lofted stable or cow-house to the west, and a slightly taller, added lofted cart shed at the west end.

The north front faces a farmyard. The barn, to the left, has a single roofline and features two sets of high double doors. To the right is the lofted stable or cow-house. The barn’s facade is punctuated by two pairs of double boarded doors, separated by three pairs of vent loops; each pair of vent loops contains two square vent holes above. The cow-house has four doors with timber lintels, and a single loft door over the third, set into an oak sill. A building line runs horizontally across the facade at approximately one-third of the height of the loft door. The later cart shed to the right has a taller roof and two boarded loft openings under the eaves, set into stone sills, above two large, segmental arched cart entries. These entries feature cut stone voussoirs and a rounded centre constructed of rubble stone and a plain capital. Exterior stone steps lead to the loft door on the west end wall. The gable verges overhang.

The rear, south-facing side, which fronts the main road, is also whitewashed. The rear of the cart shed has no windows. The stable or cow-house has one small window on the right side. The barn has two full-height doors between projecting piers, each supporting a small pentice roof. To the left of the left-hand door are three tiers of four square holes. Between the doorways are two tiers of vent loops, three below and two above. To the right of the right-hand doors are two vent loops, also with two square holes above. The converted range on the right has a south gable end with a large cart entry featuring stone voussoirs for a cambered arch. The east side of this range includes a window to the left and a door centrally placed.
