Description
The farm range at Gwernaffel Farm is an 18th-century building situated down a slope. It features a long structure that includes a two-bay barn, a lean-to feed store, cowhouses, and a stable with a loft above. The exterior is made of coursed rubble blocks and has slit ventilators. The central cowhouse loft is weatherboarded and topped with a tin roof, while there are plank doors and shutters. The right-hand rear section contains single-storey loose boxes beneath a catslide roof.
Inside, the building retains its original stalling, mangers, and hay-racks. The feed store end has tie beam trusses with diagonal braces. The first floor above the cowhouses features heavy timber-framed partitions, collar beam trusses, and queen and princess posts. The stable loft is supported by king-post trusses, with trenched purlins and pegged joints throughout.
This farm range is recognized as a good and unspoilt example of a late vernacular composite farm range. The barn area would have also been used for lambing, shearing, and storing fleeces. It holds group value with the farmhouse.
