Description

Fronfraith Farm features a group of farm buildings constructed from rubble stone with slate roofs, arranged around a farm court. The northern range includes a barn on the east side and a lofted cart-shed on the west, which has a late 19th-century open-bay hayshed added to its eastern end.

The northern range has a high-door barn on the right, characterized by a cambered arched doorway with stone voussoirs. There are three loops on each side of the barn: two above and one central below, partially obscured by pigsties on the right and a corrugated iron lean-to on the left supported by cast-iron columns. The lean-to extends in front of the lofted section to the left of the barn, featuring three pairs of casement windows under the eaves, and steps leading to the loft door at the western end. The northern side of the barn displays three broad elliptical-arched cart entries, also with stone voussoirs, and similar loft windows above. The rear of the barn on the left has a 20th-century lean-to next to a tall barn door, with three loops to the left. The hay barn at the eastern end consists of three bays, supported by square piers, with stone high plinths and brick stepped bases. Its slate roof is slightly lower than that of the main range, and it features a tie-beam truss at the eastern gable.

The western range has a slate roof with three ventilators and a chimney. The eastern side facing the court has narrow windows under the eaves and a door between two windows, with stone voussoirs, at the right end. There are various added lean-tos at the left end. The rear of the western range includes a yellow brick addition from the late 19th century, which has a parallel roof on the left. This section features a sequence of doors and windows with stone voussoirs, alternating between two doors and two windows, followed by a door between two windows. Further to the right, there is a lofted section under the same roof, with three small square 9-pane tilting loft lights above a window and two elliptical-arched coach entries. A door is located between a window and the first coach entry, and there are ledged double coach-house doors with strap hinges. The southern end has a damaged brick lean-to and a window in the gable above.

There are also minor single-storey ranges to the south and east, which have been altered. The southern range is plain, while the single-storey eastern range has former open bays that are now infilled. The barn features 19th-century bolted collar trusses.
