Description
Dolau Cottages is a row of three cottages and a byre, which were converted into holiday cottages in 2002. The buildings are constructed of rubble stone with slate roofs. The oldest section is a single-storey cottage featuring a large stone stack on the left end, which has been raised in brick. It includes a 9-pane window and a door set within a 20th-century porch. The cottage to the right, situated uphill, has an entry through the older cottage. This two-storey structure has two 9-pane sash windows on each floor, each with brick heads, and stone stacks at both ends.
To the left of the oldest part is the byre, which has three doors with stone voussoirs and board doors fitted with strap hinges. A 20th-century window has replaced the fourth door on the left. An additional cottage at the south end features brick-framed windows and brick end chimneys, with the left chimney being a dummy. It has a six-pane window above and a 9-pane window below, along with a door in the south end wall. The rear of the cottages is similar to the front but includes a door and overlight to the right. The back of the byre has an inserted window on the right and small vent loops. The older house has a 20th-century French window added. The upper cottage features a 9-pane window with stone voussoirs on the left side of the first floor and a stair window with a brick head on the right.
Inside, the oldest part contains two whitewashed oak collar trusses that are pegged but may be reused, as they show marks of differently placed collars. The tie-beams below have been sawn off. There is a very large left end fireplace with an early 19th-century painted timber gun-rack above it, and the floor is made of slate. The upper cottage consists of two rooms; the south room has a small cast-iron range from the 19th century. There is a 6-panel door leading into the back room, and a closed-in stair leads to the upper floor, which has two rooms, each with 6-panel doors and iron grates for the fireplaces. The byre features three bolted collar trusses. The bedrock beneath the chimney of the house above has been cut back to create a level floor.
