Description
The farm range dates from the 18th century and is constructed of local stone with slate roofs, with the hay barn featuring sawn slate. The range, aligned north to south, includes a wain house with a granary above, a cowhouse, a widened cowhouse, and a further cowhouse incorporating feed preparation arrangements. A four-bay, open-sided hay barn is set at a right angle beyond the first cowhouse.
The wain house, at the south end, has a wide, open-fronted gable facing onto a former elevated road, with a timber lintel outlined by a projecting slate drip moulding. The granary gable above has three ventilation slits. Continuing north, a four-bay cowhouse is constructed of small rubble stone. Its western front has been partially rebuilt in sawn slate rubble, with an opening in the second bay from the north and a blocked door on the east side. This continues as a further four-bay cowhouse, its roof extended to the west as a lean-to. Door openings face west, and small rectangular openings face east, later infilled with honeycomb brickwork. The range continues into the north cowhouse, which incorporates a cart shed at its north end, featuring an external stair on the gable end leading to the loft. A brick flue has been added to the feed boiler.
Set at a right angle to the second cowhouse is the four-bay hay barn, characterised by tall rectangular piers. The roof is reconciled with the main range by a fifth bay with a hipped roof. The two western bays have been infilled later with small rubble stone and timber framing, with a doorway inserted on the north side. The main north-south range is currently in poor condition.
The wain house is partially rock-cut and has a central beam and open joists to the granary above. The first cowhouse has tie beams and long raking struts supporting two tiers of trenched purlins. The second cowhouse has a central feeding walk and timber stall partitions on either side, supported by two sections of high walling for the higher roof. The hay barn features tie beam trusses with shouldered king posts and raking struts, all of sawn timber, along with two tiers of purlins. The roof soffit is torched.
