Description
Knowle Farmhouse is a building that likely dates from the mid-18th century, with alterations and additions made in the 19th century. It stands two storeys high with a cellar, constructed of coursed rubble on a low plinth, featuring a painted front elevation. The roof is hipped and covered with slate, and there are boxed eaves. Two tall rubble stacks are positioned on either side of the ridge.
The ground-floor windows are set under cambered voussoir heads, while the first-floor windows are located under the eaves. All windows are modern two-light, small-paned timber casements; the ground-floor windows include transoms and are said to be replicas of earlier windows that were replaced. The front elevation has stone cills. The central entrance features a panelled front door with a plain overlight, and there is a slate canopy porch supported by chamfered posts, curved braces, and decorative pierced bargeboards.
At the rear, there is a 19th-century wash-house made of brick and slate, which includes a brick end stack.
The original layout of the farmhouse includes a front parlour and kitchen, central stairs, back kitchen, pantry, and dairy. Inside, there are chamfered and scroll-stopped beams throughout, large stone flags on all floors, and a salting slab in the dairy. The 19th-century stairs have stick balusters and a boarded underside. The front room features four-panel doors, while the rear rooms have boarded doors. A narrow back staircase from the kitchen leads to a room that was once used as a granary and later for staff.
