Description
Upper House Farmhouse is probably a 17th-century building, significantly altered in the 19th century. It is constructed of rubble with a slate roof of varying pitches. The main range is in two parts, with the left part lower and gabled, and an extended, set-back catslide roof to the return. Two ridge stacks are present. The farmhouse has a T-shaped plan.
The front elevation has two storeys and three windows. The window arrangement is regular, with segmental arches above each window. There is a 12-pane early 19th-century casement window to the left of the entrance, a 12-pane sash window to the right of the entrance, and glazing-bar sash windows above the ground-floor casement and right-hand window. A 6-pane fixed window is located above and slightly left of the entrance. A circa 1950 breeze block porch has a contemporary ledged door and a pitched slate roof. A blocked window with a dripstone is to the left of the porch. A one-and-a-half-storey, two-window 19th-century extension is located to the right, with an end stack and a bread oven to the gable end. It has two casements under segmental heads with keystones, and a central ledged 19th-century door. A lean-to extension with a catslide slate roof is to the left, with a water-trough along its side.
The rear elevation of the main range features a rear stack, 18th-century cross casements, and dripstones above some windows. Inside, the farmhouse has run-out chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, low ceilings, flagged floors, and the suggestions of plank and muntin screens. A cellar is situated under the rear room of the main range, with access from external stairs.
