Description

Brookside Farmhouse is a 19th-century, timber-framed house that has been refronted in rubble stone. It is a two-storey, L-plan building with an adjoining granary wing at the north end. The south range features principal elevations made of evenly coursed rubble blocks, three large eaves dormers, and decorative openwork barge-boards. The roofs are primarily slate, except for a section of stone tiling on the yard side. There are two rubble end stacks on the south range and a tall rubble lateral stack on the west range.

The south front has a central door with a slated canopy porch, openings under flat voussoir heads, a four-panel door with an overlight, and a three-window range that includes replacement UPVC sash-type windows. There are also two 19th-century dormer casements, with the central dormer featuring a dressed stone recessed panel. On the yard side of the south range, there is an exposed section of large panel timber-framing, which includes a portion of chamfered window framing. The west range has a boarded door with a slated canopy and 20th-century windows facing the roadside, along with 19th and 20th-century casements under cambered heads on the yard side.

Inside, there are two front parlours, a central hallway, and a straight-run staircase with thick stick balusters and a closed string. The west range includes a kitchen, back kitchen, and dairy, featuring exposed beams—some with scroll stops—and flagstone floors, as well as a salting slab. Some timber-framing is visible in the partition walls. There is one six-panel door and mainly boarded doors with strap hinges. A room above the dairy, accessed by external steps and formerly used as a wool room, has large chamfered beams and exposed joists.
