Description
This listing describes a part of an L-Plan farm range located 30 meters northeast of Brookside Farmhouse. The structure includes a five-bay barn and cowhouse, dating from the mid-18th century. The barn faces the farmyard and features a central threshing bay, with an additional narrow bay at the upper end that has rubble end walls. The building is situated on a slope, causing the rubble plinth to increase in height, while the lower end of the slope contains a lofted cowhouse.
The barn has square-panel timber-framed walls, some of which are heavily diagonally braced from the wall post to the cill beam. It is covered with weatherboarding and has a slate roof. Inside, there are tie-beam trusses with two pairs of raking braces, and the roof pitch is raised with wall spurs and additional principal rafters, which are boarded out on the backs of the rafters. The bay partitions have rubble bases, a cill beam, a central post, and long angle braces. There is a double door entry from the yard.
Additionally, there is a four-bay barn that runs northwest to southeast from the rear of the main barn, dating from the late 18th century. This barn features high rubble base walls with ventilation slits and studwork upper walls, where diagonal bracing interrupts the vertical studs. It also has a weatherboarded skin and tie-beam trusses with two pairs of raking braces, along with opposing doors leading to the threshing bay.
