Description

This is a five-bay barn and cowhouse, part of an L-plan farm range located 30 meters northeast of Brookside Farmhouse. The building dates from the mid-18th century and features a three-bay barn with a central threshing bay, alongside an additional narrow bay with rubble end walls at the upper end. The structure is positioned on a slope, leading to an increase in the height of the rubble plinth, with the lower end housing a lofted cowhouse. The walls are square-panel timber-framed, with some heavy diagonal bracing extending from the wall posts to the cill beam. The exterior is covered with weatherboarding, and it has a slate roof. Inside, there are tie-beam trusses supported by two pairs of raking braces, and the roof pitch is raised with wall spurs and additional principal rafters, which are boarded out on the backs. The bay partitions consist of rubble bases, a cill beam, a central post, and long angle braces, with a double door entry from the yard.

Additionally, there is a four-bay barn that runs northwest to southeast from the rear of the main barn. This structure dates from the late 18th century and features high rubble base walls with ventilation slits, while the upper walls are made of studwork with diagonal bracing interrupting the vertical studs. It is also weatherboarded and has tie-beam trusses with two pairs of raking braces, along with opposing doors leading to the threshing bay.
