Description

The Laurels is a building dating from around 1847, as indicated by a newspaper used as original wall lining discovered during recent renovations. It is two storeys tall with a cellar, featuring a small one-and-a-half storey hip-roofed service wing at the east end and a large conservatory along the south side. The exterior is constructed with small random-sized ashlar blocks, a rusticated plinth, and tooled ashlar quoins on the principal elevations. The north elevation is made of coursed rubble with a rubble plinth. The hipped slate roof has a central well, boxed eaves, and paired-flue stacks in brick with ashlar dressings.

On the west (road-side) elevation, there are two rows of three windows, which have distinctive arched openings with tooled voussoirs and cills. The iron-framed windows feature margin glazing and fanlight heads. The south (garden) elevation has four similar windows on the first floor, while the ground floor has four French windows under flat tooled voussoir heads, with one door being a modern replacement. There is an open fronted entrance porch on the north side, which is part boarded and part glazed, topped with a pitched slate roof and decorative pierced bargeboards. The tall round-headed doorway is framed by a plank door and overlight. To the left of the door, there is a round-headed window with fan glazing but plain voussoirs. The first-floor windows are three-light casements under flat voussoir heads.

The interior has only been partially inspected but features much period detailing, including panelled shutters and cupboards, four-panel and six-panel doors, moulded ceiling cornices, and closed string stairs with panelled undersides.
