Description

This listing describes a group of farm buildings located about 20 meters east of Downton Farmhouse.

The cowhouse, likely dating from the 17th century, forms the south side of the range. It is two storeys high, built on a rubble plinth with a weatherboard exterior and an iron roof. It features seven boarded doors and boarded loft shutters. Although an internal inspection was not possible, square-panel timber framing can be seen where some weatherboards are missing.

Adjoining the north-east corner of the cowhouse is a barn from the 19th century, which has five bays. It also has a rubble plinth and stud walls with a weatherboard skin, topped with a slate roof. The barn includes a threshing bay with double doors at eaves height and is supported by pegged king-post roof trusses.

At a right angle to the north-west corner of the barn is a stable, also from the 19th century. This stable is constructed of neat rubble stone and has a slate roof, featuring stone voussoir flat arches, a boarded gable end door, a part-glazed window, and a boarded loft shutter.

Lastly, there are open-fronted cowsheds from the 19th century that adjoin the north end of the barn. These have a rubble stone rear wall and a slate roof, with open bays divided by chamfered timber posts and ogee-moulded eaves brackets.
