Description

Downtown Farmhouse is a building of uncertain date, likely from the 17th century, with the earliest part located at the rear (north) and later parallel ranges added at the south end in the 19th century. The farmhouse is two storeys high, constructed mainly of coursed rubble from different phases, with some 18th-century brickwork at the north end and 19th-century brickwork with ashlar dressings on the south front's first floor. It features slate and stone tile roofs and has three tall brick chimneys.

The open timber porch has chamfered posts and a slate roof, leading to a framed plank door with an overlight. The front windows are tall two-light casements with chamfered frames and large panes. The side windows are primarily three-light metal-framed casements from the 19th century, set under diaper brickwork and cambered lintels. There is also a framed plank side door beneath a similar lintel.

Adjoining the west side of the house are outbuildings in an L-plan range, which are weather-boarded and topped with a stone tile roof, featuring a heavy beamed interior. The outbuildings have a large flagstone floor throughout. The rear portion contains chamfered beams and possibly some timber framing, with a dairy that includes a salting slab, a kitchen with a large fireplace and bread oven, a thick slate window sill, and back stairs leading to a former granary and men's quarters.
