Mill Farmhouse

Mill Farmhouse is a house located on Stalbridge Lane in Sturminster Newton. The north range of the building dates from the 16th century or earlier, with likely alterations from the 17th century, while the southern range is probably from the 17th century. There have been general alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries. The structure features coursed rubble, timber-framed and brick walls, with thatched and tiled roofs that have stone slate verges, half-hipped and gable ends, and brick stacks.

The north range is two storeys high and has cruck frame construction with coursed rubble walls. The roof contains smoke-blackened timbers, suggesting it originally functioned as an open hall. The building has a variety of casement windows, including some from the 20th century and others with wooden mullions that are both chamfered and ovolo-moulded. The front wooden plank door is set in a chamfered square-headed doorway, which features a 20th-century porch.

The southern wing is also two storeys, with a coursed rubble ground floor and a box timber-framed upper floor that includes a mid-rail and brick nogging. This wing has a mix of windows, including 20th-century wooden casements and ovolo-moulded timber mullioned windows. Inside, the farmhouse has ceilings with deep chamfered intersecting beams and fireplaces that have cambered, chamfered timber bressummers with continuously chamfered stone jambs. The doorway between the southern and northern wings has chamfered jambs and a four-centred head. An upstairs room in the south range features an exposed cambered tie beam, and there is likely a 17th-century wooden stair with a plank door. Additionally, there is a plank and muntin partition, and some windows have outward-opening iron casements.
