Description
No 86 in Sturminster Newton is a house that likely dates back to the 15th century, with several later additions and alterations. The structure features brick walls in Flemish bond, rubble, and timber framing, topped with a thatched roof that has gable ends. There are brick stacks located one third in from each end of the building. It is a single-storey house with an attic and has a range of four windows. All ground floor openings are fitted with wooden lintels, and the windows are 2, 3, and 4-light wooden casements from the 20th century. The left gable reveals an exposed jointed cruck truss.
Inside, the layout consists of three rooms with a cross passage. Smoke-blackened timbers found in the roof suggest that the building may have originally been an open hall. The interior features include a jointed cruck truss in the attic, two chamfered square-headed timber doorways with shouldered jambs in the cross passage, and deep stopped chamfered beams and wall plates.
