Description

This listing describes a group of farm buildings located about 20 meters east of Downton Farmhouse.

The cowhouse, believed to date from the 17th century, forms the southern side of the range. It is two storeys high, featuring a rubble plinth and a weatherboard exterior with an iron roof. The cowhouse has seven boarded doors and boarded loft shutters. Although an internal inspection was not possible, square-panel timber-framing is visible where some weatherboards are missing.

Adjoining the north-east corner of the cowhouse is a barn from the 19th century, which consists of five bays. It has a rubble plinth and stud walls with a weatherboard skin, topped with a slate roof. The barn includes a threshing bay with eaves-height double doors and pegged king-post roof trusses.

At the north-west corner of the barn is a stable, also from the 19th century, which is set at right angles to the barn. This stable is constructed of neat rubble stone and features a slate roof, stone voussoir flat arches, a boarded gable end door, a part-glazed window, and a boarded loft shutter.

Finally, there are open-fronted cowsheds from the 19th century that adjoin the north end of the barn. These cowsheds have a rubble stone rear wall, a slate roof, and open bays divided by chamfered timber posts with ogee-moulded eaves brackets.
