Description

The building is a cowhouse dating from the 17th century, located on the west side of the farmyard at Dyffryn Farm. It features a timber frame with later brick noggings that have replaced the original laths, and it has a random jointed slate roof. The structure consists of six bays and has been extended towards the road by an additional building, likely originally a gig house, which now houses calves, along with a granary above that has approximately three bays. The square panel framing is raised 0.5 meters on stone sill walls. The infill brickwork is arranged with four missing headers that create a lozenge-shaped vent in each panel. There is a heavy bressumer, and the panels above are subdivided horizontally with a binding timber. A driftway runs through the fourth bay from the north. The northern gable has been rebuilt in blockwork and features a large opening.

The attached granary is constructed of brick, with a timber-framed upper floor and a stone-built gable facing the road and back wall. The cross floor beams are closely spaced, and there is no access to the roof.

The cowhouse has slightly jowled posts with straight corner braces to the tie beams, queen struts, and collars, along with angled struts to the principal rafters in the gables. There is a single tier of purlins and a diagonally set ridge. The truss on the north side of the driftway includes two windbraces, and there is another at the southern end. The southern bay has an inserted floor, and the gable wall features tension braces. Assembly marks have been made with a gouge.
