Description
Waterloo House, built around 1810-1815, is a two-storey house constructed from rubble stone and topped with a hipped slate roof. It features boxed eaves and red brick chimney stacks. The building has three bays, with a lower two-storey wing at the northwest end, which was formerly known as Waterloo Cottage, and is attached to the current Waterloo Cottage at the southeast end. The central entrance has a six-panelled door set within a doorcase that includes panelled reveals and a bracketed flat canopy. The windows are twelve-paned sashes, with the central sash above the door featuring an ogee head and pointed arched glazing bars. The right wing contains a boarded door and a multi-paned window, along with a small sash window on the first floor.
Inside, there is a narrow hallway with a staircase at the rear. The probable original principal kitchen-living room on the right has a large fireplace with a timber lintel and a panelled door that connects to the wing, which was once an independent cottage. The room to the left of the hall was likely unheated originally but now has an inserted stack. There is a filled-in cellar. Notably, the apex quarry of the ogee window on the first floor bears a scratched inscription that reads "David Rowlands, Llanfyllin, April 18th 1815."
