Description
The cowhouse at Dyffryn Farm dates from the 17th century and is located on the northern side of the farmyard. It is constructed with a timber frame and features brick noggings that have replaced the original lathing. The back wall and the west gable are made of stone, and the roof is covered with randomly jointed slate.
The structure consists of seven structural bays, with the framing raised on a rendered stone sill wall. It has a heavy bressumer and angle braces supporting the wall plate. There are two weatherboarded gables, each with pitching doors. The brick infill is arranged with missing headers that create lozenge patterns, with vents in panels containing 4, 7, 8, and 9 holes.
The trusses include a tie beam, three queen struts, a collar, and angled struts supporting the principal rafters. At the eastern end, there is an open bay where the roof extends to a stone building that is set at right angles, forming the eastern leg of the farmyard. Assembly marks made with a chisel are visible. The building currently houses 23 calf stalls.
