Description
Ferndale is an early 19th-century building, dating from before 1846. It is two storeys high, constructed from rubble stone with an overpainted plinth, and features a slate roof. The building has two end stacks with rubble upper sections. The ground-floor openings are set under cambered voussoir heads, with a central door at both the front and back. The front door, facing the garden, has four panels, while the yard-side door is boarded. The ground-floor windows have chamfered frames with transoms and a three-light bottom section that includes iron glazing bars and a central opening casement. The first-floor windows are smaller-paned, iron-framed casements.
At the west end, there is a lean-to that is partly made of rubble and partly weatherboarded, also with a slate roof. This lean-to contains a large bread oven and a copper.
The building retains its original room plan and much of its period detailing. It includes a front parlour and kitchen with central stairs, as well as a back kitchen and dairy. The floors throughout are stone flagged. The back kitchen features ceiling hooks, while the dairy has a large salting slab supported by rubble piers.
