Description

Lea Farmhouse is primarily a 19th-century building that includes parts of a 17th-century timber-framed house. It has two storeys and is constructed from coursed rubble stone in various phases. The layout is a single pile plan with a one-and-a-half storey rear dairy wing. The roof is hipped at the left end, featuring slate on the front elevation and stone tiles on the rear. There are two brick stacks: one on the right-hand gable and another offset ridge stack to the left of centre. The farmhouse has two front doors, both boarded and sheltered by pitched slate canopies. The windows, mostly from the 19th century, vary in size and all have chamfered timber frames with small-paned iron casements. The two front windows and the dairy windows feature cambered stone voussoir heads.

At the time of inspection in 1992, the farmhouse was out of use and in deteriorating condition. Inside, there is a massive internal stack with 'back to back' fireplaces. The central room has a fireplace with a 19th-century open range, a wood surround, and a mantelshelf supported by curved brackets. The back kitchen at the right-hand end includes a small brick fireplace with a bread oven and flanking coppers. The adjoining pantry reveals exposed close-studded timber framing, including a window section where the original mullions have been replaced, and features substantial chamfered and stopped beams. A dog-leg stair beside the stack has barley twist balusters. The rear dairy contains a stone salting slab and original shelving, with boarded doors throughout the property.
