Description

The farm buildings and icehouse at Llan-y-Cefn consist of a range of structures, including a stable range and a coach house located on the downhill side of the site. These buildings are built into the slope, allowing access to the lofts from ground level on the uphill side. The cowhouses are situated on the uphill western range and include a small summerhouse on their downhill side, which primarily serves as a retaining wall. The courtyard is enclosed on the eastern side by a high sandstone retaining wall that incorporates the icehouse.

The stable range is the oldest part of the group and features partial timber framing. The western gable is framed with braces, angle posts, and a central post that supports a cambered tie beam with queen struts. Two additional bays are defined by similar trusses. The framing is infilled with brick, and the front wall to the north is also brick, while the rear wall is largely made of red sandstone rubble. The coach house extends from this range to the east and has two wide segmentally arched openings on the lower floor.

The western range of the upper yard likely originated as a cowhouse, built over a retaining wall that includes a small summerhouse with gothic arched windows and a door, facing the garden of Llan-y-Cefn. The eastern range consists of a red sandstone rubble retaining wall, featuring an arched entrance to the icehouse at the north end. Inside, there is a short groin-vaulted entrance passage leading to a ground-level chamber with simple three-centred vaulting.
