Description
Newbridge Lodge features entrance gates and railings that create a striking visual composition. The lodge is positioned on the inside of the gates, built against a steep bank. It has a rusticated lower storey with three arcaded bays, a heavy cornice, and a blocking course, all supported by massive rusticated pilasters with half-round caps. These pilasters align with the piers that punctuate the railings, which extend back from the gates above the river bank. The rear angles of the lodge are also marked by pilasters, although these do not have caps.
The outer arches of the lodge contain windows, while the central arch features a deeply recessed panelled doorway with a segmentally vaulted design. The upper storey, which is stepped back and only covers the central section, has recessed hipped roofs. This upper section is made of channelled ashlar and includes scrolled volutes at the outer angles, three circular windows, a cornice, a blocking course, and a hipped slate roof, with a chimney concealed against the rear wall.
The south gable of the lodge serves as part of the flanking wall for the gates, and the southeast pilaster of the lodge acts as one of the terminal piers for the gates. The gates are paired with a flanking side gate and screen, featuring cast-iron spear-head railings adorned with scrolled and gilded decoration. A simpler railing runs along the river side of the approach to the gates, while more ornamental railings parallel to the lodge on the far side of the gates are positioned between stone pilasters.
