Description
Newbridge Lodge is a significant structure located inside the gates, built against a steeply sloping bank. Together with the gates and their railings, it creates a striking and cohesive design. The lodge features a rusticated lower storey with three arcaded bays, a heavy cornice, and a blocking course, all supported by massive rusticated pilasters with half-round caps. These pilasters align with corresponding piers in the railings that extend from the gates above the river bank. The rear angles of the lodge are also accented by pilasters, but these do not have caps. The outer arches of the lodge contain windows, while the central arch features a panelled doorway set deeply within a segmentally vaulted recess.
Flanking the stepped-back upper storey, which covers only the central section, are recessed hipped roofs. This upper section is made of channelled ashlar and includes scrolled volutes at the outer angles, three circular windows, a cornice, and a blocking course, topped with a hipped slate roof. The chimney is discreetly concealed against the rear wall. The south gable of the lodge serves as part of the flanking wall for the gates, and the southeast pilaster acts as one of the terminal piers for the gates. The gates are paired with a flanking side gate and screen, featuring cast-iron spear-head railings adorned with scrolled and gilded decoration. A simpler railing runs along the river-side approach to the gates, while more ornamental railings parallel to the lodge on the far side of the gates are positioned between stone pilasters.
