Description

Waterloo Tower, including the outwork walls, is an asymmetrically designed structure that creates a picturesque effect. It consists of two blocks of accommodation, with the tower positioned at the southeast corner of the main block and flanked by outworks to the north and south. The building is constructed of random rubble with freestone dressings. The tower features a square base with a plinth and slender, tapering octagonal upper stages, topped by a moulded string course that aligns with the cornice of the accommodation blocks. The parapet is machicolated and embattled, adorned with scallop moulding. A narrow doorway is located in the re-entrant angle next to the main accommodation block, which also has 'arrow-loop' windows on its southern elevation.

The main accommodation block is three storeys high, with the first floor lit only from the south side. It has small-paned cast-iron windows with drop-ended hood moulds, and the first floor is highlighted by a larger, three-light window featuring segmentally arched lights. The ground floor of the lower block has a similar window that is slightly canted to the right, along with a small two-light window on the first floor and an inserted or renewed doorway on its northern return elevation. Simpler small-paned iron windows of two and four lights are positioned alongside. Both blocks are topped with embattled parapets above a moulded cornice.

The outwork walls on the north and south sides of the tower are made of random rubble with freestone embattling. The southern section includes a 'mock turret' that protrudes from the line of the wall.

Inside, the building retains some original decorative features, including a fine lierne-vaulted ceiling in the upper room of the main block.
