Description

The gate piers, gates, and palings at Hafodunos are an estate gateway designed in a symmetrical Gothic Revival style. They feature four matching sandstone piers and double gates across the carriageway, with a single gate for the footpath on one side, and adjoining railings to the north. The piers have chamfered bases and monolithic square shafts, each with a shallow setback splayed-top buttress on every face. They also have chamfered arises with broach stops at the base and oversailing pyramidal capstones that include zigzag bed moulding, enriched gablets, and an apex coronet. Cast iron hinge and latch components are fixed to the piers. The modern steel double gates for the carriageway are made with vertical bars and inset scrollwork. The 19th-century timber gate for the north footpath is divided into three panels, featuring chamfered stiles, rails, and muntin, along with wrought iron cresting. The upper panel has timber lattice infill with ornamental chamfering, while the lower two panels are filled with wrought iron scrollwork and supported by cast iron strap hinges. Additionally, there are three bays of ornate wrought iron paling with scrollwork and fleur-de-lis cresting, which step up to the north, resting on a stepped sandstone plinth and timber posts.
