Description
The entrance screen to the north-east of Castle Lodge is a mid-19th century gateway that includes eight piers, linking walls, gates, railings, and an overthrow. Constructed from ashlar sandstone, the gateway features iron gates, railings, and an overthrow. The central carriageway is flanked by narrower pedestrian entrances.
Tall, square-plan piers with chamfered caps and carved stone urns stand on either side of the carriageway. Lower pairs of piers, which flank the pedestrian entrances, are topped with vases that have gadrooning. The end piers are similar in design. Four dwarf walls connect the piers between the three entrances and the end piers, featuring plinths and projecting chamfered copings.
The central two-leaf gate has rising curved middle and top rails, closely spaced uprights with spear-headed finials, and small X-scrolls that increase in height towards the center. The pedestrian entrances and dwarf walls have similar railings. A simple curved overthrow is topped with a central spherical glass lamp.
