Description

Castle Lodge is a mid-19th century former gate lodge, now a private house, built for the Brancepeth Estate. It is constructed of squared sandstone in narrow courses, with ashlar dressings. The roof is green slate, with an ashlar chimney stack. The building is arranged in a T-shape, with a cross-gabled right bay projecting to the front and rear, and a set-back left bay forming the leg of the T. An entrance is located on the gabled return of the left bay. The right bay features a three-light mullioned window with a hoodmould on the ground floor and a similar two-light window above. The gable has chamfered coping, ball finials on square kneelers, and a finial at the apex. A loggia with three Tuscan columns supporting a hipped roof is located on the left bay. A small gabled porch, featuring a chamfered round-arched doorway, is on the left return. A lean-to one-storey outshut is situated on the rear of the left bay. A tall lateral stack is on the right return. The building is included on the list for its group value.
