Description

The Close is a late 19th-century villa situated on the north side of Durham Road in Brancepeth. It is constructed of squared sandstone in narrow courses, with ashlar dressings. The roof is slate, covered with ashlar chimney stacks. The villa is two storeys high, with a three-bay design, the central bay projecting and gabled. Flush quoins are present. The central doorway has been replaced, set within a moulded, shouldered surround, with a matching overlight. Stone-mullioned windows, with sashes, are double-chamfered. A single-light window is positioned above the doorway. The outer bays feature three-light windows on the ground floor, and two-light windows above, incorporated within gabled half-dormers. The steeply-pitched roof has overhanging eaves and verges with plain bargeboards. Corniced end stacks are also present. The building is included on the list for its group value.
