Description

A pair of estate cottages dating from the mid-19th century, built for the Brancepeth Estate. They are constructed of squared sandstone in narrow courses with ashlar dressings, and have a fishscale Welsh slate roof and dressed stone chimney stacks. The cottages are in a Tudor style, with one storey and an attic. Each cottage has two bays, with number 3 situated on the left. Features include chamfered plinths and flush quoins. Each cottage has an end, vertically-panelled door with a narrow overlight in a chamfered surround, topped with a hoodmould. The windows are stone-mullioned. Number 3 has a wide, projecting gabled bay to the right, featuring a canted bay window with a hipped roof on the ground floor and a two-light window under a hoodmould above. Number 4 has a square bay window with three lights under a hipped roof on the ground floor and a gabled dormer with a two-light window under a hoodmould. Stone eaves brackets are present. The steeply pitched roof has coped gables, shaped kneelers, a central transverse chimney with a cornice, and three diagonal stacks. Numbers 3 and 4 form a symmetrical pair with numbers 1 and 2.
