Description

Neuadd Talgai is a former school and attached schoolmistress's cottage built in a picturesque Gothic style. The building has a basic L-plan layout, with the cottage set back to the north. It is constructed of roughcast rubblestone, painted on the cottage, and features slate roofs that are hipped on the school with wide, spreading bracketed eaves.

The front wall of the main school range has three timber windows with mullions and transoms, each with dripstones. The windows consist of four lights on the left and right sides and two lights in the center, all topped with arched heads above the transom. There is a similar four-light window on the right return and another two-light window on the back wall adjoining the rear range, which has a large gabled porch that projects at an angle with the main range. This porch bears a recessed slate inscription panel that reads: "This School was Erected /by/ Ann Susanah/ Baroness Penrhyn/ And the Land Granted/ by Richard Pennant Esq'r/ Ann. Dom. Mdcccxiii." Below the inscription is a recessed nail-studded door in a steeply-pointed Tudor arch. To the right of the porch is a small single-storey addition with a hip roof and two windows on the front wall. The back wall of the rear range features a four-light timber mullion window, with each light divided into eight panes.

On the main range, there is a conical metal flue at the center of the ridge, and a tall stack with chimneypots is located on the rear range. Inside, the hall has a boarded floor and a glazed screen that divides the front and rear sections.
