Description
The Wyatt Memorial at the Church of St Tegai is a large pyramidal monument made of slate, set on a square plinth with three steps. The bottom step shows traces of fitting sockets for a railed enclosure. The north-east face features a lengthy eulogistic inscription dedicated to Benjamin Wyatt, who died in 1818 at the age of 73, noting his role as the Chief Agent to the Penrhyn Estates for over 30 years. It also commemorates his wife, Sarah, who passed away in 1815 at the age of 68. The inscription on the plinth states that this sepulchre was erected "as a testimony of filial reverence and affection" at the sole and joint expense of their surviving children. The north-west face includes inscriptions for their fifth daughter, Mary, who died in 1806 at the age of 20, and their youngest son, Arthur, who died in Bengal of a fever in June 1824 at the age of 28. The south-east face is inscribed for their second daughter, Charlotte, who died in 1815 at the age of 41, and was the wife of James Greenfield. The south-west face commemorates Benjamin and Sarah's sixth son, James, who lived from 1795 to 1882, and his widow, Sarah, who lived from 1800 to 1896.
