Council Offices, Hope Street, Lanark

The Council Offices on Hope Street in Lanark, built around 1870, is a two-storey, three-bay police station constructed from ashlar stone. The building features channelled stonework at the ground level, as well as on the pilasters that flank the central bay and on the angle pilasters of the first floor. A shallow projecting central bay includes a door that is recessed under a plain set-back arch, which is inscribed with "County Police Station."

On either side of the central bay are two square-headed windows, all of which have channelled voussoirs. There is a band course that runs between the two storeys. The first floor has three windows, each with moulded aprons, and all windows are fitted with lying-pane glazing. The building is topped with an entablature and a central panelled parapet, which is flanked by pedestals with decorative caps.

The corniced stacks rise above the angle pilasters. The south elevation is made of ashlar and features lying-pane glazing in the windows, along with a blind window on the first floor. In contrast, the north and west elevations are constructed from rubble. The roof is piended and covered with slate.
