Description
The Old Police Station is a police station and magistrates court built in 1871. It is constructed from rock-faced limestone and ashlar, topped with a stone tile roof featuring stone coped gable ends and ashlar gable-end and axial stacks.
The building has a two-storey and attic design with a symmetrical front that features three bays on the right. The central bay contains a two-centred arch doorway with sidelights, above which is inscribed "COUNTY POLICE STATION" along with the date 1871, and a hoodmould above. To the left and right of the doorway are canted stone bay windows. There is a stringcourse at the first floor level, with two- and three-light stone mullion-transom windows that also have hoodmoulds. The attic has three small dormers with two-light windows featuring depressed two-centred arches. The left bay is slightly recessed and includes a depressed two-centred arch carriageway with plank double doors and a two-light mullion-transom window above. The rear of the building has a gable-ended ashlar courthouse wing with Gothic windows and external stairs on the east side.
Inside, much of the original joinery remains intact, including panelled doors and two staircases. The courtroom features an open timber roof with arch-braced trusses, a corner fireplace, and courtroom furnishings. The cells below retain their original doors and boarded beds.
