Description

The Police Station and former Magistrates' Court, built in 1860, is a former "Petty Sessional Court and Police Station" as inscribed on the gable. The magistrates' court closed in the late 1970s and the building originally housed members of the police force on the upper floors. It features rock-faced coursed stone on a moulded stone plinth with alternating flush quoins, a tile roof with coped verges and end saddlestones, and large ashlar end stacks with polygonal moulding at the front and rear.

The building has a single front range and a rear wing that contains the court, and it is two storeys high with an attic. Its symmetrical design includes a large central coped gable with a 2-light stone mullion featuring arched lights and a raised stone inscription in Gothic lettering. This is flanked by steeply-gabled dormers with boarded gables, small paired casements, and a projecting roof with a bargeboard that forms a steep arched shape.

On the first floor, there is a central oriel window with flanking 2-light stone mullions and transoms, all supported by relieving arches and a moulded continuous sill band below the splayed sills. The ground floor has pointed arch entrances at each end with flush stone chamfered archways and original studded plank doors with decorative strap hinges, along with raised stone inscriptions above. Between these entrances are two 3-light stone mullions with transoms and relieving arches.

Inside, the building contains the two original police cells with sloping board beds and the intact magistrates' court featuring a steeply pitched roof, all fittings, and an adjacent waiting room.
