Description
The Fairford War Memorial is a notable structure built from local limestone. It stands approximately 5.9 meters tall and is set on an octagonal plinth that is about 2 meters wide and 1 meter high. The memorial features a cross within a lozenge-shaped, coped head, which is supported by a tapering octagonal column that ends in an octagonal base with moulded fields. The cross, which is somewhat weathered, is intricately carved to resemble tree branches, possibly symbolizing the Tree of Life, with the three upper arms of the cross depicted as smaller branches with foliage.
The octagonal base of the column is inscribed with the legend: IN THE MEMORY OF THE MEN OF FAIRFORD WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES SERVING IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918. Below this inscription, there are moulded fields that list the names of 34 Fallen soldiers, including their initials and surnames. The base rests on a wide octagonal plinth, which also features moulded fields and is topped with a moulded, overhanging cap. One of the moulded fields on the plinth contains the names of eleven soldiers who fell during the Second World War, accompanied by the inscription: ALSO 1939 - 1945.
