Description
The Hemming and Rose Monuments are two chest tombs located in a small area bounded by a path immediately west of the south porch in the churchyard of the Church of St. Mary. They commemorate William Hemming, who died in 1796, and William Rose, who died in 1793. Both tombs are made of limestone and feature a stepped tent top, a moulded plinth, and capping on the base, along with a plain frieze and quarter baluster corners.
The Hemming tomb has plain ends and fielded oval panels on the sides, which include rosettes in the spandrels, with the top breaking up on the north side. The Rose tomb features two plain recessed panels on the north side and one on each end, along with two shallow recessed circles on the south side that have low relief in the spandrels. Notably, the southeast baluster is missing from the Rose tomb.
