Description
Number 8, including the former Magistrates' Courthouse, was built in 1857, with the courthouse itself likely added later. The building is constructed of coursed squared limestone with ashlar dressings and brick, and has Welsh-slate roofs with stone stacks. It forms an L-shaped arrangement.
The two-storey police station section has a four-window front. The gabled right bay features a four-pane segmental-headed sash window above a segmental-arched carriage entrance. The other bays contain similar, but larger, sashes to each floor. A segmental-arched doorway with an overlight sits between the first and second bays; both the doorway and the carriage entrance retain studded doors. A simple stone cornice hides the eaves gutter, and a plaque inscribed “COUNTY/POLICE/1857” is set into the gable. The rear of the police station section is stone with brick dressings.
The single-storey, gable-fronted courthouse is linked to the police station by a short range containing a large doorway and a window, both with chamfered stone surrounds. The courthouse’s gable features a pair of tall 18-pane sashes with matching surrounds and relieving arches, and a round opening in the gable. The gable parapet is finished with gabled kneelers.
A long, brick-fronted wing to the rear of the courthouse retains two 20-pane sashes and other original openings, but has been significantly altered and raised to two storeys, likely in the early 20th century. The interior of the building has not been inspected.
