Description
Mervyn, located at 13 Hope Street in Lanark, is a house built around 1830, with later refronting and additions likely made by W & J Hay in 1883. The building has two storeys and a dormerless attic, originally designed as a three-bay house, with a porch and a south wing added later. It features coursed stonework with ashlar dressings and quoins, partly stugged.
The northern block has three windows and includes a single-storey projecting porch with a shaped parapet. The south gable is advanced and has a tripartite window at ground level and a bipartite window above, with a narrow hood moulded light in the gable. All windows are framed with earred architraves that are stepped at the centre. There is a string course above the ground floor windows, raised in a semi-circle over the tripartite window, which forms a projecting coping over the door. The building has a moulded eaves course, straight coped skews with two gable end stacks, and a slate roof. The south elevation features three windows on each floor, with the western window being bipartite.
