Description

The building located on Tabernacle Street and Greenlees Road in Cambuslang is a board school designed by A Lindsay Miller and dated 1882. It features gothic architectural details and has a long single-storey front facing Greenlees Road, with a basement on the left due to the slope of the site. The advanced ends include a gable on the right and a range to the left that has a square tower topped with a slated spire, which is set within a parapet over a plain square stage that may have originally been louvred. The façade includes a doorway, stepped stair lights, and a gabled window head, along with three gabled window heads on the inner range. The exterior is constructed of stugged ashlar with polished dressings, featuring transomed and cross-windows, blind cusped panels, and some sculptured details. There are inscriptions in roundels at either end, and sash windows are present throughout. Each section has individual slate roofs with axial ventilators and stacks that have fluted friezes.

A low boundary wall with iron railings connects the advanced outer ranges to the street. The flank facing Tabernacle Street was built in two stages; the original part on the left includes the main doorway and gated steps, with a datestone from 1882 above. The addition is two-storeyed and sits at a lower level on the slope, consisting of eight bays. There is a pend on the left at the junction with the original block, featuring an off-centre door. The detailing from the original section is repeated in a simplified manner, including cross windows and sculptured details. At the rear, there is a courtyard with arcaded, mostly blind wide basement openings in the original range, and a timber-clad passageway supported on cast-iron columns that links the two main ranges.
