Description
The Savoy Bingo Club, originally the Savoy Cinema, was designed by John Fairweather in 1929. This four-storey, seven-bay building features a symmetrical design and a monumental Classical street elevation, with a gabled auditorium at the rear. The exterior is constructed of red brick, accented with cream-painted render on the street side. Some windows have raised moulded architraves, while others feature raised cills, and there is a blocking course at the outer bays.
The northern elevation facing the street has a slightly advanced central five-bay section flanked by advanced outer bays. The bays are divided by giant modified Doric pilasters that extend through the first and second storeys. The façade includes a moulded architrave, a decorative frieze with small horizontal windows, a cornice, and a deep blocking course. Shallow steps lead up to a central recessed entrance portico, which is supported by square-plan columns and features three pairs of recessed timber and glass swing doors topped with rectangular fanlights. On either side of the entrance are shops, each with an entrance door and a plate glass window.
The building predominantly has four-pane metal casement and fixed windows, with small diamond-pane fixed windows on the upper storey. The front section has a flat roof, while the auditorium at the rear has a pitched roof. The building was converted into a bingo hall, likely in the early 1960s.
