Description
The Cambuslang Literary Institute, located at 37 Greenlees Road in Cambuslang, Glasgow, was built between 1892 and 1898 based on designs by A Lindsay Miller. The building was extended in 1906 and 1910 by Williamson and others, with further alterations made later. The structure features mostly mullioned and/or transomed windows, is two storeys high, constructed from snecked ashlar, and has large-paned sash and case glazing beneath slate roofs.
A prominent feature of the institute is the engaged three-storey tower at the northeast corner, which has an upper section adorned with a complex arrangement of vertical shafts and horizontal strings, reflecting the mid-16th century Scots style typical of Miller's work. The tower is topped with a high, domed roof. The adjoining range has a long façade facing Hamilton Drive, featuring a two-storey projecting window and outer gables, with the main entrance located on Greenlees Road. To the left is a slightly lower long wing that is not original but may also have been designed by Miller. Behind this wing is the main hall, a long rectangular space that possibly represents the second phase of the institute's construction, featuring a stepped giant three-light window in the south gable and an aedicule above in Miller's style. A low boundary wall runs along the street.
