Description
8 Charlotte Street in Ayr is a two-storey, six-bay L-plan tenement built in the later 19th century by John Murdoch. The building is constructed from coursed, squared sandstone and features a base course, eaves course, and cornice, with a part-chamfered corner on the south and east elevations. The south elevation has architraves around the window openings, while the east elevation has bracketed cills.
On the south elevation, there are steps leading to architraved and corniced doorways in the third and fifth bays, each with timber doors and letterbox fanlights. Above the fifth bay, there is a single window aligned at the first floor. The outer and central bays have bipartite windows on both the ground and first floors, with a smaller window opening at the first floor to the right of the central bay. The penultimate bay to the left features an additional bay of single windows.
The east elevation, facing Fort Street, also has six bays. It includes an arched, consoled cavetto-splayed doorpiece in the fourth bay that rises to a gabled wallhead chimney, with a timber door and fanlight. There are single windows flanking the door at both the ground and first floors, bipartite windows in the second and sixth bays, and additional single windows at the ground and first floors to the left. The outer left side has a gabled wallhead chimney.
The building predominantly features plate glass timber sash and case windows and has a grey slate roof that is piended at the corner, with stone skews, coped ridge, and wallhead stacks, along with circular cans. The interiors were not seen in 1998.
