Description
21, 23, 25 Newmarket Street in Ayr is an early 19th-century tenement building with later alterations made by John Murdoch in 1880. It is two stories high with an attic and features three bays, with a shop located on the ground floor. The exterior is finished in painted sandstone and includes a cornice above the shopfront, an eaves course, a cornice at the top, and a balustraded parapet. The first floor has architraved windows.
On the northwest elevation, there is a three-centred arched Victorian arcade for the shopfront, which has been re-clad in modern materials. The central entrance features a two-leaf glazed modern aluminium door, while the outer left has a two-leaf timber door. The first floor has regular window placement, and there are two piended dormers in the attic.
The first floor and attic have plate glass timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has brick stacks with circular cans. The interior was not seen during the inspection in 1998.
