Description

2 Stuart Street in East Kilbride is an earlier 19th-century, two-storey, three-bay, L-plan traditional corner tenement. It features a curved angle recess and shops on the ground floor, with a two-storey wing to the southwest. The building is constructed of tooled coursed sandstone, which is painted, and has a tooled sandstone rubble wing. It includes a base course, a dividing band course, an eaves course, a cornice, and projecting cills.

On the northeast elevation facing Stuart Street, the design is near-symmetrical. The ground floor has a corniced and pilastered doorway in the center, supported by tapered octagonal brackets, with windows on either side. The first floor has two windows, and there is a curved angle to the outer right featuring a two-leaf glazed timber door on the ground floor and a single architraved window above.

The northwest elevation facing Hunter Street is asymmetrical and consists of three bays. It has a blind window in the center of the ground floor, flanked on the right by a doorway and a window, with a single window in the left bay. The first floor has two windows to the right, with a blind window to the left.

The southwest elevation is gabled and has a single-storey neighbor abutting at the ground floor. The flanking bays to the right are not visible as of 2001.

The southeast elevation has three bays, with a harled gabled bay to the right. It features a single off-centre window on the ground and first floors to the left, while the left return is blank. There is a recessed bay on the left with steps rising from the ground floor that curve around to the left at the first floor, leading to a 12-pane timber lying-pane window above. A gabled two-storey wing is advanced to the left bay, with blank, irregular openings on the ground floor of the right return and three regularly placed windows on the first floor. A doorway on the outer right is accessed by steps.

The building has plate glass timber sash and case windows on the ground floor, 2-pane timber sash and case windows on the first floor, and a variety of timber sash and case windows in the wing. The roof is covered with grey slate and features lead ridges, coped stone skews, a corniced wallhead stack, and a coped gablehead stack with circular cans; a stack has been removed from the east gable.

The interior was not seen in 2001.
