Description

The Old Haa of Scalloway, built around 1750 and later altered, is a three-storey, five-bay symmetrical former laird's house that has been converted into flats. The building features harl-pointed rubble walls with stugged and droved sandstone ashlar margins and dressings.

The principal elevation is a symmetrical five-bay arrangement, with a central doorpiece that has a cornice and a lugged architrave, topped by a carved armorial panel. The flanking bays contain margined windows, and the upper floors are regularly fenestrated.

On the south gable, there are two bays with windows on the first and second floors, although the bay on the right is blind. The east (rear) elevation has windows on each floor flanking the center, with a door located at the ground level on the outer right. The north gable also features two bays with windows on the first and second floors in the right bay.

The building has replacement four-pane timber sash and case windows and a purple-grey slate roof with stugged ashlar skew-copes. The gablehead stacks are made of rubble with stone copes and circular cans.

Boundary walls include a random rubble garden wall to the south and a cement-rendered crenellated wall to the east. A double staircase with stugged squared and snecked sandstone parapets rises from the street to the entrance level.
