Description

West Port House, located at 297-299 High Street in Linlithgow, dates back to around 1600 and includes parts of an earlier building, with alterations and additions made in the 18th century and later. The house was restored and converted into flats by William A Cadell, Architects, in 1990. It is a two-storey and attic, asymmetrical, L-plan laird's house featuring a turnpike stair leading to a wing and a tall single-storey wing to the east. The structure is built of sandstone rubble and has single windows, most of which have relieving arches, along with crowstepped gables on the east and south elevations.

On the north (street) elevation, the building is asymmetrical with four windows at ground level, including a smaller window off-centre to the left, and five windows on the first floor, plus three swept dormer-headed windows above. The west (side) elevation has a gabled return with two windows on the first floor and one window in the attic. The south (entrance) elevation is also asymmetrical, featuring a three-storey wing that projects to the right, with a door to the right, a window above it at the first and second floors, and a window to the left at ground level.

The wing on the entrance elevation has an advanced squared stair turret in the re-entrant angle, which is corbelled with a squinch at the first floor, and it has blocked windows below ground. There is a door to the right with a blocked narrow window above, as well as windows to the ground and first floor to the right with roll-moulded architraves, and a small window above in the attic. The south elevation of the wing features a gabled return with windows on the first and second floors to the left.

The single-storey wing to the right has a red pantiled roof with a slate easing course and two irregular windows on the south elevation, along with a door on the north elevation. The east elevation has a window on the first and second floors, and a small window in the attic to the left. The east (side) elevation includes a gabled return with a window at ground level and two windows on the second floor.

The house features 12-pane and plate glass sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, and sandstone stacks with moulded cans at the gables. Inside, the first-floor rooms of the main block have chimneypieces with bolection moulding. The property is enclosed by retaining walls made of coped rubble, topped with light wrought-iron railings and a gateway to the west.
