Description
Melby House is a former laird's house from the later 18th century. It is a two-storey building with an attic and features a symmetrical three-bay front, along with a single-storey wing at the rear that forms a square plan. The walls are harled with painted margins around the windows, and there is an eaves course. The projecting window sills and margined corners add to its architectural detail. The entrance door is centrally located in the main (northeast) elevation, flanked by windows, with a regular arrangement of windows on the first floor.
On the southeast elevation, the design is asymmetrical, with a two-bay gable of the main range to the right. There is a single window at ground level in the right bay and regular fenestration on the first floor, along with a small square window in the attic. The three-bay rear wing extends to the left, featuring a door in the center bay, a gabled projection in the right bay, and a window in the left bay.
The southwest (rear) elevation is symmetrical, showcasing a single-storey rear wing that is advanced at the center. A parapet connects three flue apex stacks to the M-roof. The northwest elevation includes a single-storey lean-to against the blank gable of the main range on the left, with the rear wing extending to the right.
The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case. The principal range has a grey slate roof, while the rear wing features a glass M-roof. The building is adorned with painted ashlar bracketed skew-copes, and the gablehead stacks are harled and capped with circular cans.
The garden in front of the principal elevation is enclosed by a harled wall on the northeast side, featuring a central gate made of square stugged sandstone gatepiers with pyramidal caps. There are rectangular enclosures flanking the central garden to the northwest and southeast.
