Description
St Margaret's Kirk and Graveyard in Sandness is a hall church built in 1792, featuring a symmetrical design with two one-bay sections. The church has harled walls and includes hoppered nine-pane timber windows on either side of the central entrance on the south elevation. The east gable has a cement-rendered infill for the door, which is set within a pointed-arched opening in a gabled, stugged ashlar bellcote at the top. The north elevation consists of two bays, with a nine-pane timber window in the right bay and modern two-leaf doors in the left bay. The west gable also has pointed-arched windows with border-glazed stained glass.
The church is topped with a purple-grey slate roof that features harled skew copes. Surrounding the church is a graveyard enclosed by a harl-pointed battered rubble wall with a semicircular rubble cope on the south side. There are cast-iron railings flanking the church on the east and west, and square rubble gatepiers with pyramidal caps mark the vehicular and pedestrian gateways at the southeast corner.
